Pillai College students shine at State Level Research Convention
8th Maharashtra State Inter-University Research Convention “Avishkar”

The teams of both postgraduate and undergraduate engineering students from Pillai College of Engineering, New Panvel have won trophies and secured Gold Medal at the 8th Maharashtra State Inter-University Research Convention “Avishkar”, which was held at North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon during 16th – 18th January, 2014. In all, nineteen universities from Maharashtra participated in the above event. It is to the credit of the students of Pillai College that the University of Mumbai could bag the “Individual Championship” in Engineering and Technology.

Sagar Kulkarni, a student of Master of Engineering (Computer Engineering) at PCE, has developed a “Morphological Analyzer for Devanagari Script” under the guidance of Prof. Sharvari Govilkar. This research will go a long way in the use of computers for information retrieval from hand written Devanagari Script documents. The undergraduate team consisted of Eshani Diwakar, Shringa Sekhar, Ruturaj Swami and Utkarsh Trivedi, and the paper was presented by Ruturaj Swami. This team also worked under the guidance of Prof. Sharvari Govilkar and has developed “Morphological Approach for Segmentation and recognition of Scanned Handwritten Devnagri documents”, which will enable editing of the document in Devanagari Script. The above two research projects together will facilitate the use of computers for editing and information retrieval from the handwritten documents in Indian regional languages such as Hindi and Marathi.

Prior to the State Level Competition, there were university level competitions at each of the nineteen universities. The top two projects from each university were sent for the state level competition. The university level Inter-Collegiate Research Convention of Mumbai University was held at V. V. Bhawan, Churchgate during 4th – 6th January, 2014. The research papers were adjudged by eminent judges based on poster / model presentation and oral presentation. The PCE teams were adjudged 1st among 77 teams in UG category and 1st and 3rd among 25 teams in PG category at above competition. Speaking to the media, Principal Dr. R. I. K. Moorthy told that keeping in view the new challenges in knowledge and innovation, Pillai College of Engineering has been making a conscious effort to train its students in research activity.

Avishkar – A Research Convention was initiated by His Excellency Shri K. Sankaranarayanan, Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra and Chancellor of the Universities in the State of Maharashtra to develop research culture and scientific temper among the students. This year, the University of Mumbai has won “Overall Champion” Trophy and four “Individual Championship” trophies out of six, namely in Humanities, Commerce, Engineering and Medicine.
